Photos of Norham CastleNorham castle stands on a hill just outside the Village of Norham on the south bank of the River Tweed, near Berwick. Built in the 12th Century it is now just a ruin but it was a castle of great strategic value due to it's position overlooking the River Tweed and the Border with Scotland. It was once considered the most dangerous place in England. The Castle withstood many sieges by the Scots before it fell at the hands of James IV of Scotland in 1513, when it sustained enormous damage. However, following the Scottish defeat shortly after at the Battle of Flodden it was returned to English hands. A period of repair followed but about 10 years after it was seized from the Bishop of Durham by Queen Elizabeth 1 it was deemed unfit to be a Garrison and subsequently fell into a state of ruin.
