Hexham Abbey, Northumberland.Hexham Abbey dominates the town centre and is one of Northumberlands most well known buildings and visitor attractions. It is also still very much a place of worship and is the Parish Church of Hexham. The Abbey was founded by Saint Wilfrid in the 7th century, some of which still exists, but most of the current building dates from the 12th and 13th centuries. Stones from the nearby Roman Fort at Corbridge were used to build the crypt. Major rebuilding was carried out in the 19th century including the east end. The nave was re-consecrated in 1908. © Copyright - All photos are subject to copyright and may not be reproduced in any format or displayed on any website without prior written permission.
